People
It is important that you are a ‘people person’ and you enjoy working closely with people. Most of the time you will be working on a one-to-one basis with your client.
Character
Patience, tolerance and a calm disposition as well as a friendly nature are important. You must be able to put clients at ease and quickly instil confidence in them.
Ethics
A serious approach is required with a lot of tact and diplomacy. Respecting your client’s privacy is vital.
Health
Good health and fitness is a must. A lot of the work is very tiring and physically strenuous, and sometimes the hours can be very long.
Commitment
A rewarding career requires dedication both in training and practice. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. Sincerity and conscientiousness are a must.
Examining Bodies
Comite International d’Esthetique et de Cosmetologie (C.I.D.E.S.C.O) is a non profit Organisation of Esthetics and Cosmetology. It was founded in 1946 and registered in Zurich, Switzerland. CIDESCO’s aims are to promote Esthetics on an international basis and to co-ordinate professional activities worldwide. www.cidesco.com
International Therapy Examination Council UK (I.T.E.C) was founded in 1947 by Dr William Arnould-Taylor and became known as ITEC in 1973. ITEC is an international examination board offering a variety or qualifications worldwide. They provide over 35 qualifications that are UK government accredited including Beauty Services. ITEC qualifications are supported by industry and are easily transportable nationally and internationally. www.itecworld.co.uk

The Beauty Clinic
Upon successful graduation, you will be qualified to either attain a position in a beauty therapy clinic or become self-employed. Many of our past students are extremely successful clinic owners who give freely of their time to discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of the business world. We have a network of career placements for our students in New Zealand and around the world.
Cosmetic Houses
Many of the leading Cosmetic Houses require qualified Beauty Therapists to represent their brands either as a travelling consultant or working in store at one of their cosmetic counters in a department store, perfumery, pharmacy etc.
Cruise Liners
For many years now, opportunities have arisen for Beauty Therapists to be employed on worldwide cruise liners. Positions arise on a regular basis, and providing criteria is met (regarding qualifications and age), New Zealand Therapists are very acceptable. Contracts are for approximately eight months with the option to renew. This is an exciting opportunity to see fascinating parts of the world and expand your knowledge.

Virgin Airlines, based in the UK are now employing Beauty Therapists to work on their Transatlantic flights performing relaxing treatments such as facials and massage.

This is also another place Beauty Therapists can rent space or are employed on the counter. This exposes you to another type of retail work.
Destination and Resort Spas
Opportunities for employment in European and Australian Health Farms and Spas are high for those with our Beauty Therapy qualification. Advice and contacts can be supplied for this challenging work.
Apperance Medicine Clinics
More positions are available for Beauty Therapists to work alongside Skin Specialists, Dermatologists, Plastic Surgeons and nurses providing treatments using microdermabrasion, skin peels and other skin treatments for pre and post surgery.
